I agree with you for the most part, but I’ve come to the conclusion that COVER Corp, the company behind Hololive, is also to blame. YAGOO himself used to refer to Hololive as a “virtual idol agency”. But at some point they decided to drop “idol” from the description and now Hololive is simply a “vtuber agency.”
So basically they are not idols. However, this leads to a lot of confusion for the fans, because some members call themselves idols. And if you’re a fan from like 2018, you’ve probably gotten used to see them as idols just because that’s the way they were presented to you back then. I means, just look atSuisei’s catchphrase:
“It’s your shooting star, your diamond in the rough, idol VTuber Hoshimachi Suisei!”
Pekora and other members also call themselves idols. Also, the joke regarding YAGOO’s dream is based on the fact that Hololive members are not true idols, seiso idols, which implies that they’re still idols, just not seiso.
So yeah, if you’re a hardcore idol fan you know what to expect from idols and of course you’re gonna be P***ed if the girls are not acting like idols. So you might say, “Hey your concept of idols is outdated”. Well, maybe, but then again the fans weren’t the ones putting the “idol” label on these girls. It was COVER Corp. and some of the Hololive members themselves.

Well here I’m gonna roast myself a little bit but whatever. I’m a former idol fan. I liked Nogizaka46, Keyakizaka46, and other idol groups.
There’s like an unwritten pact between fans and idols. Fans support these girls financially and idols have to be pure, not have boyfriends, shake hands with them, etc., anything that lets the fans live in their little fantasies however fu**ed up it may sound. The point is both parties agree to this pact.
It’s not more fun, it doesn’t change anything, it’s just the fact they didn’t do what they promised to their fans. As the comment I answered to said, if you’re gonna call yourself an idol you better mean it otherwise you’re gonna get a lot of hate. Girls are aware of this too but of course they’re gonna agree with this unwritten pact because that’s the selling point of idols. If you don’t like it then announce your solo debut and see how it goes. Surprisingly in Korea and Japan it’s very hard to make it to the top as a solo artist so it’s kind of a dilemma. In fact it’s harder to make it to the top if you used to be in an idol group because you’re kinda seen as a traitor or something. If you’re aware of kpop idols you should know most of this though.
And like I said a lot of this is cultural. There’s a lot of things only Asian fans understand when it comes to idol culture. Asian fans are a lot more harsh than we western fans are. It’s funny to admit it but we western fans are a lot more liberal when it comes to our public figures and entertainers. Asian fans care a lot about public image and groups of people, while we western fans tend to care about the individuals.
There’s an experiment in which Asian kids are asked if a boy in a picture is happy. Even if the boy is smiling they will say no. Why? Because there’s a bunch of kids around him none of which seems to be happy. When they asked the western kids the same question they said like yeah sure can’t you see he’s smiling?
Hmmm my knowledge on this deeper end of idol thing is very shallow. I didn’t follow any idol and only discovered this stuff recently, so I wouldn’t know. Frankly, I’m not that knowledgeable of KPOP idol stuff either, all I know is that this “unwritten pact” wasn’t in effect and that dating was fine among them. Perhaps ignorance on my part, I just thought this “unwritten pact” was something the fans just imposed on their vtuber idol for their personal fantasy. I suppose culture does play a role in it. If that’s what being an idol means in Japan or something, I guess the fans will have this type of expectation. Though even if it’s both side, I still find this type of thinking to be absurd, it’s like some sort of feudal concept, but let’s just leave it at that.
Lots of idols are allowed to date now though. It’s a really old fashioned rule, that is now actually illegal to enforce. The constant scandals that hit groups like AKB48 have made it clear that the rule was never followed in the first place, and Minami Minegishi continued on for six years despite having a boyfriend. It didn’t even hit her popularity in the long term.
Many idol groups these days, like Hololive, explicitly do not possess dating bans. They’re considered a turn off to casual and overseas fans, which comprise a huge section of Hololive’s audience. Korean idols (which have well eclipsed the popularity of Japanese ones) only have a short term dating ban generally.
It’s also totally impractical for Hololive. RL idol groups recruit in the teens and early twenties, many of Hololive’s most successful members are in their thirties. You don’t find that many chaste thirty year olds.

Pekora has always been (somewhat oddly) really attached to the ‘classical idol’ thing. The kind of idol that lost a lot of it’s credibility in 2016. Maybe it is because she grew up with those kind of idols, being twenty seven now. Maybe it just appeals to her.
It’s a bit strange because her background and past history isn’t really that pure, and there’s bountiful evidence that she’s been involved with Junichi Kato for years now. A lot of her fans kinda take it as fact that she’s married to him, and even has kids. She’s also… a pretty wacky streamer, with one of the most mainstream audiences in the company, and seems to fall very much on the ‘comedian’ side.
But yeah. Likely the most attached to the idol thing in the company, after Sora and Suisei. At this point I just shrug and figure it’s “because Pekora”. Whatever she’s doing clearly works.
Very few of the others push the idol image though, Marine and Okayu have spoken out against being considered one, and whole skits have revolved around the fact that most of the company are far from the ideal. The most famous and notable centered somewhat appropriately around Aqua, who started her career streaming with her boyfriend. Pekora is certainly not the standard.

Well it’s still a question of what even is a idol, because you can’t really hold them to a definition that was deeply shaky after Minami Minegishi shaving her head in 2013, outright made illegal in 2016, and made an extremely bleak joke when Maho Yamaguchi was assaulted in 2018. Or to the standard a really old and rather conservative group like AKB48 imposes (though AKB48’s dating ban is an utter joke). The idol group Dempagumi.inc has had members go on maternity leave, and as I mentioned dating is common with Kpop idols (and honestly, part of the appeal. Celebrity gossip!)
Idols dating has been a thing for almost a decade now, and though I don’t think there’s ever been a married RL idol (simply for practical reasons I figure) there’s been fan pressure for a few idols to continue after marriage. Most idol fans are against the dating ban, 74% disagreed with it in 2016, and the opposition has only increased since then. And that’s from hardcore fans (as the poll was circulated through fan groups).
These days the idol concept has been pretty much boiled down to it’s core, “a entertainer who encourages a close emotional bond with their fans”.
